I’ve always been attracted to exotic food. A meat and potatoes girl I am not. So when I found out about Macao Trading Co., a hot NYC dining spot serving Macanese cuisine, I ran to see what all of the buzz was about.
The restaurant is reminiscent of Macao’s red lantern district in the 40’s and everything; from the mysterious entrance on Church St (there is no sign on the door), to the darkly lit room, and banquet seating, oozes sexiness. Macanese cuisine is a mix of both Portuguese and Chinese influence, and at Macao Trading Co. you have the option to have your dish in Portuguese style or Chinese style.
The cocktail menu features drinks with cool names like Yellow Fever and The Bashful Maiden. I decided to be adventurous and ordered The Drunken Dragon’s Milk which has Green Tea Vodka and Coconut Puree. After perusing through the exotic dinner choices, we decided on the Chicken Dumplings and the Portuguese style African chicken with coconut curry and spinach. The dumplings were delish and the African Chicken was so tasty. Between the ambience, food, and 2 Drunken Dragon’s Milks, I was hooked. Macao Trading Co. left a good taste in my mouth and I’m dreaming about when I can take my next journey to Macao…

Favorite Summer Berry

Our last re-blog got us drooling over some berries. I’ve been munching away on a lot of blueberries this summer and I’m just hoping I come away this season without turning into Violet Beauregarde.

Yummr wants to know YOUR favorite summer berry - check out our poll!

“Hey, Joe!” In an article by the New York Press, they ask the question, ” We’re breaking the bank on iced coffee this summer — but why?” I feel like this is a common question asked by those of us who frequent our local coffee shop in the sweltering heat of summer.  I mean really, in an iced coffee there is less coffee than in the same size hot drink right? But apparently there is more to it than your average brew.  Check it out!

“Wontons? More Like Yumtons!”- Low-Fat Crispy Vegetable Wontons
I’ve really been wanting to try out using wonton wrappers for some time now and finally last night I had the chance.  This recipe was easy, quick and definitely won’t break the bank!
What You Need (For about 20-25 Wontons):
Wonton Wrappers
3/4 Cup Frozen Chopped Onions
3/4 Cup Frozen Chopped Broccoli Florets
3/4 Cup Frozen Chopped Spinach
3/4 Cup White Mushrooms
1/4 Cup Shredded Carrots
1 Tbsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
Onion Powder (To taste)
Vegetarian Mushroom Stirfry Sauce (to taste)
Heat Oven to 400 degrees on convection.
1. In a microwave safe bowl, combine spinach, mushrooms, onions, broccoli and carrots.  Microwave for about 5 minutes or until all the veggies have thawed.
2. Then, using a hand blender, chop the veggies so that they are a rough chop (enough that they will fit easily in the wontons).  Next, add the seasoning, sauce and sesame seeds.  Mix well and taste, add more seasoning or sauce if needed.
3. Next, place a small dollop of veggie mixture close to a corner of the wonton wrapper.  Wet the opposite edges with water and fold the wonton over to form a triangle.  Then use a fork to seal the edges, press the fork down onto the wonton so that it crimps the edges.  Then, take the two long corners and fold them towards the middle of the wonton.  Wet the corners and press them together.

4. Place the folded wontons onto a greased cookie sheet and place in the convection oven for about 10-15 minutes or until crispy.  Then, remove baked wontons and place onto a paper towel to remove excess grease.
5. Serve with Sweet Chili Sauce or Ponzu Sauce.

It is officially coming to that time of year again….the preparation to head off to College! Along with this new, unchartered territory comes how to cook there? No kitchen, no sink, no dishwasher, and many “forbidden” appliances! How do you survive?? Here are some great dorm ideas from those who have already been there.

A little spice, a little sweet, a dash of salt, and satisfying crunch! So I know Honeydew and Green Tomatoes might sound like an odd combination, but Epicurious has a healthy and fresh summer recipe for — “Green Tomato and Honeydew Melon Salad” Try it out!

Get Your Food Before It Drives Off

It seems as though fast-food trucks are popping up all over. Even the Taco Bell truck is crusing around giving away free tacos. Rickshaw Dumpling Bar is also along for the ride. Who will be next?
